چکیده

Phytoplankton growth rates and zooplankton grazing were estimated on 16 occasions over a period of 17 months in University Lake, highly eutrophic lake the campus Louisiana State University. chlorophyll concentrations averaged 1.0 ± 0.2 d?1 240 120 mg m?3, respectively. Chlorophyll at or above inflection point Holling type I curve that described relationship between concentrations. In most cases, it was necessary to dilute water by more than factor 4 before became sensitive positively correlated with temperature roughly fourfold higher 30 °C 15 °C. Pigment-specific rates of phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the open subarctic Pacific Ocean

A long-standing hypothesis states that low year-round phytoplankton biomass in the open subarctic Pacific Ocean is maintained by herbivorous grazing. To evaluate the balance between phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing, we carried out seawater dilution experiments at two subarctic Pacific locations in June and September 1987. Pigment-specific phytoplankton growth and grazing rates ...

Growth rates of phytoplankton under fluctuating light

1. The effect of light fluctuations on the growth rates of four species of freshwater phytoplankton was investigated. Experimental light regimes included constant irradiance and fluctuations of a step function form, with equal proportion of high (maximum of 240 mmol photons m s) and low light (minimum of 5 mmol photons m s) (or dark) in a period. Fluctuations of 1, 8 and 24-h periods were impos...

Terrestrial carbohydrates support freshwater zooplankton during phytoplankton deficiency

Freshwater food webs can be partly supported by terrestrial primary production, often deriving from plant litter of surrounding catchment vegetation. Although consisting mainly of poorly bioavailable lignin, with low protein and lipid content, the carbohydrates from fallen tree leaves and shoreline vegetation may be utilized by aquatic consumers. Here we show that during phytoplankton deficienc...

Effects of sumithion on growth and production of phytoplankton and zooplankton in aquaculture ponds

Sumithion is an organophosphorous pesticide widely used to control tiger bug in the fish larval rearing pond. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of sumithion on plankton population abundance in aquaculture pond. The experiment was carried out with three treatments, i.e., ponds with no sumithion (T1), with 1.0 ppm sumithion (T2) and 2.0 ppm sumithion (T3). The water quality p...
